Beginers guide to Texas Holdem Poker:
1. We start with the two players to the left of the dealer placing a predetermined amount of money so there is an initial amount to get the game started, this is referred to as posting the blinds. We have 2 blind amounts, little blinds and big blinds, the player first to the left of the dealer is deemed small blind, and the next player to the left is big blind, the amounts of these fixed bets can vary from game to game.
2. The dealer shuffles the deck and deals each player, himself included, two cards each face down, these are knows as pocket cards or your hole.
3. You may then look at your cards, and a first round of betting begins with the player to the left of the 2 blinds players, this round of betting is known as the pre-flop. The amount that can be bet depends on the game you are in, some games will have limits, others are no limit.
4. Whilst betting, you have 3 options, Call (match the current bet), raise (match and increase the bet), or fold (give up this hand).
5. After this round of betting is completed the dealer will discard the top card from the deck, this is called the burn card and is done to help avoid cheating.
6. The dealer will now deal 3 cards face us to the middle of the table, this is called the flop. These cards are communal and can be used in conjunction with the cards held in your hand (pocket cards) to form a poker hand made of of 5 cards in total.
7. Once the flop is out, there is another round of betting, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. Once this betting is complete, the dealer deals a forth card face up in the middle this is called the turn card, players can now use this card to help form their best 5 cards.
8. There is now another round of betting starting to the left of the dealer.
9. The dealer then burns the top card of the deck (disgards it) and deals a fifth card face up to the table, this is known as the river. Player now have 2 cards in their hand (pocket cards) and 5 community cards face up on the table, players now make up their best 5 card hand. At this point the final round of betting takes place, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
10. Once betting is complete, the remaining players begin to reveal their hands, players will use a combination of their pocket cards and 3 of the 5 community cards to make up their best possible poker hand, the strongest hand wins the money or pot. If 2 or more player have the same hand, a split pot is declared and the money shared.
These are the basics you will need to get started, it may seem daunting, but with a few practise hands under your belt you will pick it up very quickly and soon be playing to a good standard. Our tables are all free play, so you can practise as much as you wish.
